Labyrinths of caves connected by underground rivers,
large caverns with unique stalagmites and stalactites, extensive halls with
prehistoric traces, a river, which in the depth of one hundred metres forges its
way through the largest Czech gorge…These are unique places of the underground
world, which you can discover in the Czech Republic.
Bozkov Dolomite Caves
The only cave system in the Czech Republic created in the calcite and quartz
dolomites. The labyrinth of corridors and caves shows a unique ribbed, comb and
net structured walls and ceilings, with fragile stalactite and stalagmite
decoration of interesting shapes and colours. Part of the underground space is
filled with underground lakes, including the largest underground lake in the
Czech Republic.
Konepruské Caves
The three-storey cave system is the largest stalactite and stalagmite
decorated system in the Czech Republic, showing remarkable structuring and
colours of walls and ceilings. The middle floor is also an important
archaeological site with skeleton remnants of extinct Pleistocene and even
earlier animals, skeleton fragments of the Early Stone Age man (of the Homo
sapiens sapiens type), his instruments and jewellery. The upper floor of the
cave system was a secret coiners forge. The caves are situated not far from the
Karlstejn and Krivoklát castles.
Chýnovská Cave
A cave system in a varied multi-layer crystalline calcite (marble) and
amphibole ground. The walls and ceilings of the extremely varied broken
underground corridors and caves are therefore exceptionally colourful,
containing the „pyctic eyes“. The bottom floor is partly filled with an
underground stream. The cave was discovered in 1863 and soon made accessible to
the public. The romantic style of the sightseeing tour has been preserved until
today.
Zbrasov Aragonite Caves
The only accessible Czech cave of the hydro-thermal origin. The cave was
created by hot springs of underground thermal water, also the origin of the
unique aragonite decoration including layers of onyxes, geyser stalagmites,
druses and bushes of fragile aragonite crystals. The bottom spaces are filled
with gas lakes of the carbon oxide. Not far from the caves there is the deepest
abyss of the Czech Republic – the Hranice abyss. A larger part of it is
permanently filled with mineral water. The abyss has been investigated to the
depth of 274,5 m, without reaching the bottom.
Javorícko Caves
A several kilometres long cave system with mighty caves, corridors and
abysses, extremely richly decorated with stalactites and stalagmites of many
colours and shapes, from tiny and fragile eccentric stalactites and „straws“ to
several metres long „curtains“, bulged objects and giant stalagmites. The Giant
Cave is one of our largest and most richly decorated underground spaces.
Mladec Caves
A labyrinth of fissure corridors, broken caves and chimneys with stalactite
and stalagmite decorations, an exceptionally important palaentological and
archaeological site. Besides bones of extinct Pleistocene vertebrates, the
findings include multiple skeletons of Early Stone Age people, including
numerous evidence of their way of life.
Na Pomezí Caves
A large two-storey system of fissure corridors and chimney-like caves in
pure crystalline calcite (marble) ground, decorated with interesting stalactites,
stalagmites, sinter lakes and cave pearls.
Na Spicáku Caves
The oldest documented cave system in Central Europe (the first written
account dates from 1430), frequently visited since the Middle Ages, as is
evidenced with numerous epigraphic records on the walls and ceilings (the oldest
dating from 1564). A not very extensive horizontal system of unique heart-shaped
corridors was created by the water of the melting edge of a quaternary
continental iceberg. Occasional chamber concerts are held in the cave. The
sightseeing tour is accessible for the disabled.
Punkva Caves
The cave system, created by the Punkva underground river between Pustý Zleb
and the world-famous Macocha abyss, is part of the longest cave system in the
Czech Republic (The Amateur Cave is about 30 km long). The sightseeing tour
includes a „dry“ tour, a route through a system of mighty caves with rich
stalactite and stalagmite decorations, the bottom of the Macocha abyss 138 m
deep, and an electric boat drive through the Macocha water caves down the Punkva
underground river, with a stop in the Masaryk Cave – the most beautiful
underground space of the Moravian karst.
Balcarka Cave
A two-storey labyrinth of broken corridors connected with chimneys and high
caves with extremely rich and varied colourful stalactite and stalagmite
decorations. The natural entrance is a significant palaentological and
archaeological locality, a source of numerous findings of Pleistocene animal
bones, flint stone and bone instruments and fireplaces of Early Stone Age people.
Katerinská Cave
The cave has the largest accessible underground space in the Czech Republic
(97 m long, 44 m wide, 20 m high) and unique stalactites and stalagmites to
decorate it, including a group of exceptionally thin, up to 4 m high stalagmite
sticks in the „Bamboo forest“. The excellent acoustics of the main cave is
demonstrated to tourist with reproduced music and concerts held here several
times a year. The portal of the cave is a significant palaentological and
archaeological locality. Another unique aspect of the cave is mass occurrence of
cave bear skeletons in one of the chimneys.
Sloupsko – Sosuvské Caves
A large corridor and cave system in two floors connected with mighty underground
abysses, up to 80 m deep. The cave is the richest source of findings of cave
animal skeletons (bears, lions, hyenas). Eliska cave with rich stalactite and
stalagmite decorations often houses chamber concerts. The system also includes a
spacious grotto called „Shed“, one of our best-known and best investigated
archaeological sites. Besides stone and bone instruments, the findings include a
fragment of a Neanderthal man’s skull (about 120 000 years old).
